The Jim Wacker Memorial Scholarship The Jim Wacker Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of the University’s legendary football coach and athletic director, Jim Wacker (1936- 2003), and his commitment to class, integrity, and academic success.

Jim Wacker was born in Detroit, Michigan and earned a bachelor’s degree at Valparaiso University, where he starred in football. After graduation he embarked on a long and successful career as a college football coach. He led the Southwest Texas State University Bobcats to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships in 1981 and 1982. He later coached at Texas Christian University and the University of Minnesota before returning to Southwest Texas State University as athletic director in 1998.

Jim Wacker was a legend in the coaching profession, not only because of his highly successful football teams but also because of his insistence on winning with class and integrity. He was a firm believer in the power and value of higher education, and he held a master’s degree in Geography from Wayne State University and a doctorate in Education from the University of Nebraska. He was an honorary member of the Department of Geography and cherished his association with the Department.
