Byron “Doc” Augustin Undergraduate Geography Scholarship (SA5004)
Eligibility:
• be a sophomore, junior, or senior student
• majoring in Geography – Resource & Environmental Studies
• financing at least 50% of their university education
• have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
• write a two-page, double-spaced essay on what the student hopes to do with their degree in geography
The Byron “Doc†Augustin Undergraduate Geography Scholarship honors Dr. Byron Augustin’s truly extraordinary undergraduate geography teaching, student mentoring, and outstanding service to the Texas State University (previously Southwest Texas State University) Department of Geography and to the University.
Doc joined the Department of Geography faculty at Texas State University in 1978 and served as Regent’s Professor, mentor, and guide to students until his retirement in 2010. He was totally dedicated to his students and maintained an unwavering passion for teaching. His first love was regional geography and, as a result, he traveled extensively on five continents and throughout forty-nine states in the U.S. “Doc†encouraged his students to travel and experience geography in the real world. He led students on study abroad programs to Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, the Republic of South Africa, Italy, and Switzerland. His affection for his students and Texas State University was legendary.
