James and Ann Nell Gann Endowed Student Environmental Award (SG0070)
The James and Ann Nell Gann Endowments honor the story of Ann Nell Burns and Jim Gann, who met at SWT, and went on to make an impact not only in their local community but int the world through their careers. Jim graduated with a Bachelor of Science with a major in Chemistry in 1957, and Ann Nell earned a Bachelor of Science with a major in Home Economics in 1958. As a student, Jim worked many jobs including teaching chemistry labs to continue the pursuit of his education. After graduation, Jim worked as a chemical plant manager for Celanese, opening plants in Texas and Mexico. He became very involved in wastewater treatment and water issues in the Matagorda Bay area and held a more personal interest as a rice farm owner and recreational fisherman. Through this experience, Jim sees Texas faces increasing pressure on its water resources, especially as it relates to the demands on the Colorado River resulting in ecological and economic consequences for Matagorda Bay and the surrounding region. The James and Ann Nell Gann Endowed Student Environmental Award will attract, support and help retain Chemistry students who meet the criteria below:
- Must be a freshman, sophomore or junior classification with a chemistry/biochemistry major or minor.
- Must be a full-time student in good standing.
- While GPA is a consideration, clear evidence of commitment to sustainability as articulated in the essay and participation in extracurricular activities will be weighted heavily. Successful applications will demonstrate the student’s interest and involvement in sustainability initiatives.
