Captain Tammie Jo Shults Scholarship (SS0103)
Established by Carter and Jill Malouf, this scholarship honors the distinguished service and aviation career of Captain Tammie Jo Shults, a trailblazing naval aviator and commercial airline captain. Captain Shults became one of the first female naval aviators to qualify in the FlA-18 Hornet, flew training missions as an instructor aggressor pilot for naval aviators during Operation Desert Storm, and was awarded two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, a National Defense Service Medal and a Marksmanship Medal. After leaving the Navy, Captain Shults joined Southwest Airlines, where she calmly and competently landed Flight 1380, after the Boeing 737’s engine blade failed and flying debris damaged the fuselage causing the plane to decompress. In addition to honoring Captain Schults, this scholarship supports students pursuing a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS) with an Aviation Science Concentration at Texas State University.
