Brian, Judy and Ron Brown Endowed Award in Thesis Development (SB0061)
Purpose
The award provides funds to full-time graduate students enrolled in the Texas State History Department Master of Arts degree program to cover travel (international or 500 miles from San Marcos, TX) or expenses to acquire additional resources for research work. Scholarships are awarded for the summer and disbursed in the Spring semester.
Eligibility
The following students are eligible:
- Currently-enrolled students on the Thesis Track who have demonstrated excellent research skills and great promise as historians in the graduate courses in History that they have completed at Texas State University.
Selection Process
- Each spring semester, fellowship recipients will be selected by the Department of History Graduate Advisor and Graduate Committee, in consultation with the Chair of the Department of History. Offers will be made in March.
- The Graduate Advisor, Graduate Committee, and Chair shall take the following criteria into account:
- The quality and feasibility of the proposal
- Academic record and promise (GPA)
- The likelihood that the fellowship will facilitate the student’s enrollment in the MA Program and/or the student’s timely completion of his or her degree
- The student’s proposed research agenda and its alignment with the M.A. program’s fields of graduate study.
Application Materials
Applications shall consist of the following materials:
- CV (Curriculum Vitae)
- Research Proposal with a budget and a budget justification (3-pages in total. For students who have already completed 5399A, this document should be based on the thesis proposal.). The proposal should address these four questions succinctly: 1. The specific question your research will address; 2. How the question relates to issues raised or discussed by other historians who have worked on the topic; 3. Why this question is historically relevant; 4. What specific archival sources you will use to answer the question (mention the archives you will visit, when you will visit them, and the specific collections you plan to examine.)
- A letter of recommendation from their Texas State History Department faculty thesis advisor
This scholarship opportunity opens on October 15. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 pm, March 1.
