Touchstone-Kimmel Scholarship in Geography Interpretation (ST6319)
Touchstone-Kimmel Scholarship in Geographic Interpretation honors the lifelong commitments of Roy H. Touchstone and Ross Kimmel Jr. to education. One scholarship is awarded each spring pending available funding and applied to the following fall.
The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage undergraduate or graduate students to develop capabilities to use geographic concepts to foster understanding and appreciation of Earth within the general public.
Roy H. Touchstone (1908-1984) was an officer of the Gulf Mobile, and Ohio Railroad, as well as founder and owner of the Touchstone Railway Supply and Manufacturing Company in Jackson, Tennessee. The Locomotive Maintenance Officers Association honored him in 1982. He was always generous with friends, employees, and family, especially in helping them achieve educational goals.
Ross Kimmel (1918-1992) loved to travel the back roads and byways of Texas and was always interested in Texas State University. Mr. Kimmel had a long career in the retail lumber business as General Manager of National Building Centers. He was honored as Texas Lumberman of the Year in 1978 by the Texas Lumberman’s Association.
Eligibility Criteria:
- be a major in the Department of Geography at Texas State
- have a B or higher grade in GEO 4322 / 5322
- write an essay describing the student’s goals within the field of geographic interpretation
