The Allen D. Hellman Geography Scholarship (SH6108)

The Allen D. Hellman Geography Scholarship honors Allen D. Hellman, retired professor and past chair of the Department of Geography and Planning. One scholarship is awarded each fall and/or spring pending available funding and applied to the following fall.

Dr. Allen D. Hellman, Professor Emeritus of Geography, was born in Dollar Bay, Michigan, on November 29, 1921 and died in San Marcos, Texas, on December 29, 2011. He grew up in Lansing, Michigan, where he won the Michigan State High School Swimming Championship in 1939. He served for five years as a naval aviator in the Pacific theater during World War II. After the war, he remained active as a member of the U.S. Navy Reserve and he became an air photo interpretation officer, instructing officers in the use of aerial photography and space imagery until his retirement from the Reserves in 1978.

In 1966, he came to Texas State (SWT) as Professor and Chair of the Department of Geography and Planning. As Department Chair, he laid the foundations that have led to the Department’s current status as one of the country’s best departments of geography. He remained on the Texas State faculty until his retirement in 1984. Upon his retirement, Dr. Hellman served as Executive Vice President for research and marketing for Medical and Environmental Systems for Electrowave Systems in San Antonio; as president of the Remote Sensing and Mapping Laboratory in Seguin; and as a senior consultant for Carto-Remote Sensing Consultants in San Marcos.

Eligibility Criteria:

• enroll in at least one geography class
• be a full-time student (enrolled in 12 hours)
• show financial need
• show an interest in majoring in geography
• preference will be given to an incoming student
