This scholarship honors Sally Ann Karnau, one of the first five students in the Texas State Geography doctoral program. The scholarship will help other students who wish to pursue careers in geography.
Sally Ann Karnau was born on January 31, 1961 and died after a lengthy illness on August 27, 2000. She completed a bachelor’s degree at Texas State (SWT) in 1982, with education certification in reading, science, and mathematics. She earned a master’s degree at Texas State in 1984 with a major in biology. She was also an instructor in biology at Texas State. Later, she continued her biology studies toward a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin. She entered the Ph.D. program in Geographic Education at Texas State in 1996 but was unable to continue the program because of illness.
Sally especially loved field studies, participating in field trips with her students at the mere suggestion of a place to go. She loved her career in education because it allowed her to help others become better citizens who are aware of their surroundings. She loved to travel and visited much of the United States, several Canadian provinces, as well as Jamaica, Costa Rica, and many areas in Mexico.
