Sam and Ann Hawkins Endowed Education Scholarship (SH0027)
The Sam and Ann Hawkins Endowed Education Scholarship is to honor Malcolm’s parents, Sam and Ann, and the family legacy of service to their communities as teachers. Sam spent a lifetime career in public education, teaching in public schools and San Jacinto College for 40 years. He retired in 1994 after being named a Minnie Stevens Piper Professor, the highest honor in Texas Higher Education. Ann completed her master’s degree at then Southwest Texas University in 1965. She was an elementary school teacher for 38 years with Pasadena Independent School District. This endowment shall be used to award scholarships to students at Texas State University, benefiting the College of Education and using these criteria:
- Recipient(s) must be undergraduate student teachers who are not in a paid residency or paid student teaching assignment, and who are pursuing certification in EC-6, Middle Level 4-8, Special Education, or All-Level Physical Education;
- Recipient (s) will receive the award during the time of student teaching; and,
- It is a preference for the student to be a first-generation college student with financial need.
